Canada Retaliates as Trade War Escalates with 50% US Tariff

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced retaliatory tariffs against the United States on Saturday after bilateral trade negotiations collapsed in Washington. The breakdown followed the implementation of fifty percent United States tariffs affecting approximately twenty billion dollars worth of Canadian exports. Carney stated that Canada would respond directly by targeting American steel and dairy industries, with implementation scheduled for September eighth. Negotiations concluded after officials failed to resolve disagreements regarding Section two thirty two exemptions and trade restrictions involving third party nations. United States President Donald Trump expressed deep disappointment, noting that a viable agreement was previously anticipated by officials. United States Trade Representative Jamieson Greer confirmed that the administration is moving forward with defensive measures while formal talks remain suspended. Major corporate business associations, including the Business Roundtable, warned that escalating trade barriers risk driving up operational costs and consumer prices across North America starting from this weekend onward.
