US and Canada Trade Talks Collapse As Massive New Tariffs Imposed

PUBLISHED Aug 22, 2026, 1:52 PM ET

The United States imposed 50% tariffs on about $20 billion of Canadian goods on August 22 after last-minute trade negotiations collapsed, escalating tensions with a major trading partner. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said Washington’s final proposed terms were unfair and uneconomic, suspended negotiations and recalled his team. He pledged dollar-for-dollar retaliation, with Canadian measures scheduled for September 8. U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer gave a different account, saying Canada introduced new demands and reversed commitments after negotiators had reached a tentative balance. The new U.S. duties cover hundreds of products, including hockey equipment, wine, furniture, dairy products, cement and clothing, while key Canadian exports such as energy and critical minerals are exempt. The dispute follows an earlier three-day tariff delay intended to facilitate negotiations. The escalation could increase costs and disrupt cross-border supply chains, while complicating the future of the U.S.-Mexico-Canada trade framework for American manufacturers, retailers, and consumers.
