U.S. Business Activity Surges to 52-Month High on Service Sector Rebound

PUBLISHED Aug 21, 2026, 11:08 PM ET

U.S. private sector business activity accelerated in August to its highest level in 52 months, propelled by a robust rebound in the services sector that successfully offset a manufacturing slowdown. S&P Global reported that its flash composite purchasing managers index climbed to 56 from 54.5 in July. Chris Williamson, chief business economist at S&P Global Market Intelligence, stated that domestic business activity is booming, pointing toward annualized third quarter gross domestic product growth approaching three percent. The services output index rose significantly, driving job creation at the fastest pace recorded since early 2025. Meanwhile, manufacturing expansion moderated to a low amid supply delays and reduced inventory building linked to ongoing disruptions in the Middle East. Although input costs remained elevated due to higher energy prices, overall selling price inflation showed signs of cooling. Analysts noted that resilient corporate investment continues to counteract consumer spending divergence across domestic markets nationwide today.
