President Donald Trump announced a temporary waiver of out of quota tariffs on ground beef imports to combat soaring grocery inflation. Writing on Truth Social, Trump stated the United States will permit up to 300,000 metric tons of ground beef to enter duty free for a ninety day period. The administration secured commitments ensuring the imported supply will be retailed at twenty five percent below current market rates. The move follows significant economic pressure, with Bureau of Labor Statistics data showing ground beef prices reaching a record $6.89 per pound in July. Domestic producers face severe supply constraints driven by multi year droughts and shrinking cattle inventories. Agriculture organizations, including the National Cattlemens Association, immediately criticized the decision, warning it harms domestic ranchers and destabilizes long term market recovery. Live cattle futures fell sharply following the announcement. White House officials indicated a formal executive order will be signed very soon.
