TikTok and its parent company ByteDance agreed to pay $400 million to resolve a Department of Justice lawsuit alleging violations of federal children's online privacy laws. The DOJ announced the agreement on Friday, marking one of the largest recoveries ever obtained under the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act. Filed initially in 2024, the federal complaint claimed the video platform knowingly collected personal data from children under thirteen without parental consent and ignored deletion requests. Under terms of the settlement, TikTok will pay $300 million immediately, with an additional $100 million contingent upon a federal court vacating an earlier consent decree involving predecessor entity Musical.ly. Representatives for TikTok did not immediately issue comment following the announcement.
