U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said Aug. 20 that Washington will impose the “toughest sanctions in history” on Iran, escalating an economic campaign intended to pressure Tehran without resuming large-scale military operations. Bessent told CNBC that the United States would seek coordinated international isolation and warned countries continuing to transfer money, buy Iranian oil or facilitate shipping could face enforcement action. President Donald Trump had threatened economic consequences a day earlier for entities providing Iran an “economic lifeline.” Bessent said further details would be announced Monday and predicted the pressure would collapse Iran’s government, a forecast that remains unverified. Iran’s Foreign Ministry condemned the measures as economic terrorism and said they would not weaken Tehran’s resolve. China, Iran’s largest oil customer, opposed unilateral sanctions and urged diplomacy. The escalation comes as disruptions around the Strait of Hormuz have pushed oil prices higher, raising inflation risks for American consumers and businesses.
