Indiana Flood Damage Could Top $5 Billion as State Seeks Federal Aid

The severe weather system, which featured a destructive derecho, torrential rainfall, and tornadoes, has caused at least seven fatalities, multiple injuries, and over 1,000 damaged or destroyed structures. At its peak, more than 350,000 residents lost power, prompting widespread emergency deployments and infrastructure repairs. While President Donald Trump approved an initial emergency declaration on August 15 providing up to $5 million in immediate federal response aid, the state is now pursuing higher-tier assistance. Meanwhile, Indiana has activated its State Disaster Relief Fund, offering emergency grants of up to $5,000 to help displaced families cover essential needs while federal and state damage assessments conclude.
