Severe thunderstorms and likely tornadoes pummeled the northeastern United States on Thursday, bringing intense flash flooding that closed major highways, stranded motorists, and caused significant structural damage across multiple states. In New York, floodwaters forced the closure of a section of the Long Island Expressway in Queens, while a possible tornado tore apart a major beach club at Atlantic Beach. Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman declared a local state of emergency as emergency search teams actively monitored coastal properties. In Jersey City, New Jersey, municipal emergency responders utilized small inflatable boats to rescue trapped people inside vehicles overtaken by rapid water accumulation. Meanwhile, a confirmed tornado touched down in Dover, Delaware, damaging commercial lodging roofs, uprooting large trees, and knocking out power for over a thousand local residents. Flash flood warnings remained active across eastern Pennsylvania and New Jersey as meteorologists tracked the severe weather system moving east offshore.
