The Yankees defeated the Orioles 5-3 in Baltimore Wednesday, Aug. 19, at Camden Yards after a disputed seventh-inning foul call involving Pete Alonso. With the score tied 3-3 and two outs, Alonso drove a high fly toward the left-field foul pole ruled foul. Replay review upheld the call, although one available angle appeared to show the ball on the fair side of the pole; reporting said the camera perspective was insufficient to establish the ball’s position conclusively. Alonso then struck out. New York scored twice in the eighth, taking the lead on George Lombard Jr.’s infield single before Jazz Chisholm Jr. scored on a wild pitch. Brent Headrick earned the win and David Bednar recorded his 29th save. Alonso and Orioles manager Craig Albernaz called for better foul-pole technology, while Orioles pitcher Chris Bassitt criticized MLB’s lack of a definitive system. Baltimore fell to 61-66; New York improved to 71-55.
