LeBron James has signed a two-year, $8 million contract with the Philadelphia 76ers, leaving the Los Angeles Lakers after eight seasons . The deal includes a player option for the second year, with the 41-year-old stating this is his "last decision" before likely retirement . James earned $52.6 million in his final Lakers season but accepted the veteran minimum exception to join a Sixers core featuring Joel Embiid, Jaylen Brown, and Tyrese Maxey . The Lakers had declined to offer James a three-year extension, planning to build around Luka Doncic while maintaining salary cap flexibility . James was reportedly pursued by the Cleveland Cavaliers, Miami Heat, and Golden State Warriors, with the Warriors attempting four trade negotiations . Philadelphia's recruitment effort included direct contact from players and team president Mike Gansey, who has known James since high school in Ohio . The 76ers went 45-37 last season and were swept by the eventual champion New York Knicks in the second round . James averaged 20.9 points, 7.2 assists, and 6.1 rebounds last season . He won the 2020 NBA championship with the Lakers and is the NBA's all-time leading scorer .
