US Sued Over "Secret Panel" Writing National Dietary Guidelines

PUBLISHED Aug 20, 2026, 12:48 AM ET

The Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine has filed a lawsuit in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia against the federal government, seeking to invalidate the 2025-2030 Dietary Guidelines for Americans. Filed on August 19, 2026, the complaint alleges that the Department of Health and Human Services and the U.S. Department of Agriculture unlawfully bypassed independent research by replacing the official Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee with a confidential panel of meat, dairy, and low-carbohydrate diet industry consultants. The lawsuit asserts that eight of the nine panel members possessed corporate conflicts of interest, violating the Federal Advisory Committee Act. Plaintiffs are requesting a court order to immediately withdraw the recommendations and halt their use in federal nutrition programs until a legally compliant process is completed. Government agencies have not yet issued a formal legal response to the federal court filing.
