A fast-moving wildfire near Tok, Alaska, prompted Level 3 GO evacuations Monday as strong winds drove flames through residential areas along the Alaska Highway. The Mukluk Fire began near Sundog Trail shortly before noon and grew from about 20 acres Monday to more than 1,500 acres by evening, according to the Alaska Division of Forestry and Fire Protection. Officials said a downed or arcing power line appeared to have ignited the human-caused fire, but the exact cause remained under investigation. Evacuations covered areas north of the highway between Moose Horn Road and Sundog Trail, with residents directed to shelters including the Tok Dog Mushers Association Hall. Firefighters deployed engines, dozers, aircraft and smokejumpers while crews worked to protect structures and establish containment. Rain later Monday helped moderate fire behavior. Local reports said several structures may have been destroyed, but the final damage count remained unconfirmed. Authorities monitored the fire Tuesday.
