AG Refuses Independence Pledge
Attorney General Todd Blanche said Sunday he would not pledge that the Justice Department would operate independently of the White House, drawing scrutiny over prosecutorial independence under President Donald Trump. During an NBC News “Meet the Press” interview, Blanche said an attorney general should not make such a pledge, while arguing the president should have a voice in law-enforcement priorities. Blanche said Trump has never personally asked him to prosecute an individual and would never request illegal or unethical conduct. Blanche, a former Trump defense lawyer, was confirmed as attorney general earlier this month. He also defended Washington U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro after Trump criticized her decision to drop charges against former Olympian David Hearn over alleged damage to the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool. Reuters reported that the White House has sought consideration of new charges. Blanche said he fully supports Pirro, underscoring tensions between presidential preferences and prosecutorial judgment.
