The Office of the Comptroller of the Currency on Friday conditionally approved a national trust bank charter for World Liberty Trust Company, a Trump-family-linked crypto venture. The approval, announced Aug. 14, allows the proposed bank, if final conditions are met, to issue and manage World Liberty Financial’s USD1 stablecoin and provide digital-asset custody. The trust bank would not accept deposits or make conventional loans. OCC records show World Liberty filed its charter application in January 2026. The company says an entity affiliated with Donald Trump and family members owns about 38% of relevant equity. Democratic lawmakers, including Senator Elizabeth Warren, criticized the decision, citing potential conflicts involving Trump’s financial interests. The OCC said its review followed statutory duties and ethical obligations. Final authorization remains conditional, requiring additional capital and other pre-opening requirements. The development strengthens federal regulatory recognition of a Trump-linked crypto business while intensifying scrutiny of presidential financial conflicts.
