White House Classifies Shooting as Assassination Attempt, Citing Security Threat

On May 23, 21-year-old Nasire Best approached a Secret Service checkpoint at 17th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue NW, pulled a firearm from a bag and opened fire at officers, according to the Secret Service. Officers returned fire, striking Best, who later died at a hospital. A bystander was also wounded, while Trump, who was inside the White House, was unharmed. Publicly available Secret Service accounts initially described gunfire directed at officers and did not establish Best’s motive. A Justice Department filing later called the episode another attempted assassination and argued it demonstrated the need for enhanced presidential security. The administration is separately asking the Supreme Court to permit construction of the ballroom after lower courts blocked above-ground work, citing national-security concerns.
