FDA Upgrades 19 Million Egg Recall to Class I Risk Level Over Death and Severe Illness Hazard

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has classified a recall of nearly 19.1 million eggs from Midwest Poultry Services as Class I, its highest-risk category, amid a multistate Salmonella Enteritidis outbreak. The FDA classification, issued Aug. 12, applies to 1,589,577 dozen white-shell and brown cage-free eggs produced at Texas farms between June 6 and July 3, 2026. The eggs were sold under brands including Kroger, Simple Truth, Brookshire’s, Country Morning and Sunups, with sell-by or best-by dates through Aug. 17. FDA and CDC investigators reported 98 outbreak illnesses, 26 hospitalizations and no deaths across 17 states as of July 24. FDA said the recalled eggs were a likely source but did not account for every illness, leaving other sources under investigation. Consumers and food-service operators should not eat or serve cartons bearing codes P-1950 or 0840962 with Julian dates 157 through 184, and should discard or return them for refunds.
