Wyoming Giant Water Battery

Federal environmental regulators have advanced a massive 972-megawatt pumped-storage energy project at the Seminoe Reservoir in central Wyoming. Developed by rPlus Hydro subsidiary Black Canyon Hydro, the initiative aims to utilize water as a giant rechargeable battery to store excess wind energy and stabilize the electrical grid. The plan involves constructing a new upper reservoir approximately one thousand feet above the existing basin in the Bennet Mountains, connected via underground tunnels to a powerhouse embedded inside the granite terrain. During periods of low electricity demand and high generation, surplus power will pump water uphill, while high-demand surges will release stored water through subterranean turbines. Spanning roughly nineteen hundred acres of federal and private land, the project has reached its final federal environmental review phase led by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission. However, local county commissioners and conservation groups note that low water levels at the reservoir and necessary Bureau of Land Management reviews mean construction remains distant.
