US Court Forces Big Tech Addiction Trials
The 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled on August 10, 2026, that Meta Platforms, Alphabet’s Google, ByteDance’s TikTok, and Snap Inc. must face thousands of consolidated federal lawsuits alleging their platforms are designed to be addictive to young users. The three-judge panel rejected attempts by Meta and TikTok to overturn a lower court’s decision allowing the litigation to proceed, determining the companies’ appeal based on Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act was premature. The companies argued Section 230 shielded them from design-related liability, but the court held the law provides a defense rather than immunity from suit. Separately, the court denied Meta’s request to delay an upcoming multistate trial involving 29 attorneys general. Plaintiffs, including states and school districts, seek damages for mental health crises allegedly fueled by these platforms. The companies deny the claims. Trials remain ongoing under U.S. District Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers.
