New Amazon Data Center Is Set to Have the Most Polluting Power Plant in the U.S.
Amazon confirmed Friday that it is financially backing a massive private natural gas power plant in Pecos County, Texas, to supply electricity to a new artificial intelligence data center campus. Developed alongside Pacifico Energy, the GW Ranch project features thirty five gas turbines designed to generate 7.65 gigawatts of power. State environmental permits authorize the facility to emit up to 33 million metric tons of greenhouse gases annually, which could establish it as one of the largest single pollution sources in the United States. Company representatives stated that generating on site power avoids placing infrastructure costs on local utility customers while bypassing congested grid interconnection queues.
