Trump Denies Clash with Defense Secretary Over Iran War Munitions Shortage

President Donald Trump on Thursday denied a Washington Post report that he angrily confronted Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth over severe munitions shortages that have constrained U.S. military operations against Iran. Trump posted on Truth Social that the report was "false and completely unfounded rumors." He said he is "extremely happy with the job that Pete Hegseth is doing." He added that the war with Iran "is going very well!" and called the newspaper's reporting "treasonous." The Washington Post, citing two unnamed sources familiar with the matter, reported that Trump confronted Hegseth during a cabinet meeting last Friday at Camp David, the presidential retreat in Maryland. Trump told Hegseth he had been misled about the missile shortage and believed the issue "had been fixed." According to the Post, Hegseth defended himself during the exchange and blamed Deputy Defense Secretary Stephen Feinberg for the shortages and for failing to ensure Trump was fully informed about the state of U.S. stockpiles. The reported clash came amid growing concerns that U.S. munitions stockpiles have been depleted during months of conflict with Iran. CNN reported separately that shortages of long-range guided missiles and air defense interceptors have started limiting Trump's options in the conflict. The network said the U.S. military had used up nearly 80% of its supply of Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) interceptors. The Washington Post also reported that these supply concerns played a role in Trump's decision to hold off on further strikes against Iran, a notable shift given his repeated public threats to strike the country "very hard." Trump has publicly insisted the United States has "massive amounts" of ammunition on hand. He said defense companies are building more factories and production facilities than at any other time in the country's history. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt called the account of the Camp David confrontation "FAKE NEWS!" in a post on X, writing that she was present at Camp David with both Trump and Hegseth and that the described exchange "literally never happened." Leavitt also moved to shut down speculation about Hegseth's job security, saying Trump "loves the Secretary and thinks he's doing a tremendous job." Pentagon chief spokesperson Sean Parnell echoed that sentiment, calling both the reported confrontation and the weapons shortage claims "equally fictional." Parnell added that Hegseth "isn't going anywhere." Trump also threatened long prison sentences for officials leaking information about the military's weapons supplies. "The 'leakers' of these treasonous statements are being hunted down," he wrote on Truth Social. "Long term jail sentences will be sought!" The clash report emerged as Trump expressed optimism about ending the Iran conflict. He told reporters on Thursday that he believes the war will end "pretty soon," saying Iran "can't go much longer." However, Iran's foreign ministry has denied there are any negotiations underway with Washington.
