Google AI Leadership Restructured as Chief Scientist Jeff Dean Departs

Alphabet Inc. announced a major restructuring of its artificial intelligence leadership on Wednesday, August 5, 2026, as Google Chief Scientist Jeff Dean and several top executives departed the company while Google DeepMind Chief Executive Officer Demis Hassabis stepped back from operational management. Jeff Dean, who served at Google for nearly 27 years and led the company’s foundational computing and AI infrastructure, resigned to co-found a new public benefit corporation named Discovery Loop, Inc. Joining Dean in the venture are three other senior Google AI leaders: Sanjay Ghemawat, a Google Senior Fellow; Oriol Vinyals, Vice President of Research at Google DeepMind and co-technical lead for Gemini; and Quoc Le, a co-founder of Google Brain. Discovery Loop will focus on leveraging artificial intelligence to automate scientific research across machine learning, chip design, drug discovery, and materials science. Alphabet confirmed it will serve as a founding investor and cloud computing partner for the new startup, which also received initial backing from venture capital firms Radical Ventures and Khosla Ventures. Simultaneously, Google DeepMind Chief Executive Officer Demis Hassabis stepped down from day-to-day management of the AI division. Hassabis will transition into the newly created position of Alphabet Chief Scientist while serving as Chairman of Google DeepMind. In an internal memo to employees, Hassabis stated that he will focus on the broader societal implications of artificial general intelligence (AGI) and continue his role as Chief Executive Officer of Isomorphic Labs, a drug discovery spinoff. Alphabet Chief Executive Officer Sundar Pichai announced that Koray Kavukcuoglu, previously Chief Technology Officer of Google DeepMind, has been promoted to Senior Vice President. Kavukcuoglu will assume full operational leadership over Gemini model development, frontier AI research, and the Gemini application and developer teams, reporting directly to Pichai. The executive leadership changes follow rapid expansion of Google's consumer AI products, with the Gemini application reaching 950 million monthly active users and the open-source Gemma models exceeding 900 million downloads worldwide. However, the unexpected departure of Gemini's primary technical architects coincides with delays in the release of the flagship edition of Google's next-generation Gemini AI model, which was originally scheduled for launch in June 2026. Alphabet shares experienced a decline during trading following the afternoon announcements.
