Left-wing political outsider Abdul El-Sayed won the Michigan Democratic primary election for the United States Senate on Tuesday night. El-Sayed, the son of Egyptian immigrants, defeated establishment candidate Representative Haley Stevens. The victory positions him to potentially become the first Muslim U.S. senator if he wins the general election in November. The race was highly competitive and concluded with a narrow margin. With 90 percent of the vote counted, El-Sayed held 49 percent of the vote compared to 47 percent for Stevens. This represents a margin of approximately 28,000 votes. Modern pre-election polling had suggested a larger lead for El-Sayed over the weeks leading up to the vote.Ideological differences separated the two candidates during the campaign. El-Sayed secured endorsements from progressive political figures, including Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders and New York Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. He campaigned on progressive initiatives, including Medicare for All and increased taxes on higher-income earners.Stevens, a four-term congresswoman, ran as a moderate candidate. She received endorsements from Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer and outgoing Senator Gary Peters. Stevens centered her campaign platform on preserving manufacturing jobs within the state.Foreign policy emerged as a primary point of division between the campaigns, specifically regarding U.S. involvement in the Middle East. El-Sayed vocally opposed ongoing American involvement and aid to Israel. Conversely, Stevens expressed staunch support for Israel and advocated for maintaining U.S. aid without attaching additional conditions. The American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) spent heavily to support Stevens' campaign. The open Senate seat is currently held by a retiring Democrat. It will be contested in the November general election, where El-Sayed will face the Republican nominee, Mike Rogers.Michigan remains a critical swing state in federal elections. A Republican senator has not been elected in Michigan since 1994. However, the state's voting patterns fluctuate heavily in presidential cycles, supporting Democrat Joe Biden in 2020 before voting for Donald Trump in 2024. The general election outcome for this seat will heavily influence which political party controls the Senate majority.
