Armed Man Arrested Surveilling Trump Golf Course

Los Angeles County Sheriff's deputies arrested an armed 38-year-old California man outside the Trump National Golf Club in Rancho Palos Verdes. The suspect, identified as Jeanine John Taele of Downey, was detained on Sunday afternoon. The arrest occurred two days before President Donald Trump arrived at the golf club for a Republican National Committee fundraising dinner. Plainclothes federal agents reported Taele as a suspicious individual. Agents observed him walking throughout the golf course grounds, taking photographs and videos. Authorities stated he appeared to be monitoring security-planning activities ahead of the presidential visit. Upon detaining Taele, deputies found a 16-round magazine containing hollow-point ammunition in his pants pocket. A subsequent search of his vehicle uncovered a loaded pistol and a second loaded magazine containing hollow-point ammunition. Taele was taken into custody on charges of carrying a concealed firearm and possession of prohibited ammunition. On Monday, detectives assigned to the FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force and local law enforcement executed a search warrant at Taele’s residence in Downey. The search was authorized due to the potential security implications surrounding the incident. During the search, investigators recovered an illegally modified AR-style rifle, a .45-caliber pistol, and body armor. Authorities also seized high-capacity magazines, additional ammunition, two radio signal devices, and multiple notebooks. Officials reported the notebooks contained "concerning statements," though the specific nature of the remarks has not been disclosed. The United States Department of Justice announced federal charges against Taele, including possession of an unregistered short-barreled rifle. This felony carries a maximum statutory sentence of 10 years in federal prison. Taele also faces a misdemeanor charge for carrying a concealed firearm in a vehicle. During his initial court appearance for state charges on Monday, Taele pleaded not guilty. A judge set his bail at $250,000. The court issued an order requiring him to stay away from the golf course and prohibiting him from possessing weapons. Taele is also under investigation by the El Segundo Police Department in connection with a separate second-degree robbery case. The FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force and the U.S. Secret Service are actively assisting in the ongoing investigation. The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department stated they have identified no credible threat to the community. Officials have not confirmed if Taele was explicitly planning an attack on the president, and investigators have not released a motive. President Trump landed in Los Angeles on Tuesday evening to attend the scheduled event.
