Australian home prices fell 0.7% in July from June, the steepest monthly drop since December 2022, according to property consultant Cotality. Annual price growth slowed to 5.3%, down from double-digit rates earlier this year. Sydney and Melbourne led declines with monthly falls of 1.4% and 1.2%, both now more than 5% below recent peaks, while Perth’s market was flat. Cotality also revised previous months’ prices lower, underscoring the rapid downturn. Reserve Bank of Australia Governor Michele Bullock highlighted the weakening housing market this week, fuelling expectations rate hikes may be paused.
