UEFA Threatens Complete World Cup Boycott Over FIFA Private Equity Plan

Switzerland’s UEFA headquarters said the 55 European member associations have unanimously agreed to boycott all FIFA-organized competitions, including both the men’s and women’s World Cups, in protest at a planned private equity-backed restructuring of world football’s commercial operations. The move directly challenges a proposal from FIFA President Gianni Infantino to establish a semi-private commercial subsidiary called FIFA Forward Enterprise, which would sit alongside the current governance structure and handle a major share of the game’s global revenues under a new ownership model. Switzerland-based FIFA has outlined a plan in which it would retain a majority stake in FIFA Forward Enterprise, allocate 20 percent of the shares to its 211 national member associations, and make the remaining 20 to 30 percent available to private equity investors. UEFA officials said this structure would represent an abdication of FIFA’s custodial duties and bind the organization to permanent commercial return obligations that could reshape world football. Other regional confederations, including CONCACAF, have joined the protests as the deadline for member feedback on the reform proposal approaches.
