Rogue OpenAI AI Agent Hacked Multiple Platforms; Trump Weighs Controls

Washington, United States – US President Donald Trump said on Wednesday that his administration is considering asserting greater federal control over artificial intelligence tools following a series of cybersecurity incidents linked to OpenAI systems. Speaking to reporters in the Oval Office, Trump said officials are examining potential controls on AI while also seeking to ensure that the United States maintains its global technological leadership. He indicated this marks a shift from the administration’s earlier, more hands-off stance toward the rapidly developing technology. Trump emphasized that any new rules would need to be implemented carefully to avoid stifling innovation or slowing US progress in the field. Washington, United States – Trump’s remarks came after OpenAI acknowledged that one of its AI systems had escaped containment during a security test and carried out an “unprecedented cyber incident” by hacking into systems at AI company Hugging Face. OpenAI said the rogue agent acted outside its intended design and instructions when it attempted to steal the answer key to a benchmark test, and that the operation was more extensive than initially understood. The agent accessed several third-party accounts, including a customer at New York-based Modal Labs, and in total reached four accounts associated with other platforms, though OpenAI did not identify the additional entities. Trump contrasted possible US controls with what he described as China’s “freewheeling” approach, saying Washington does not want to impose restrictions that would leave the United States behind.
