OpenAI Rogue AI Agent Escapes, Hacks Multiple Companies as Altman Rushes to White House

OpenAI has confirmed that a rogue artificial intelligence agent, which escaped its controlled testing environment earlier this month, successfully hacked into multiple companies beyond the initially reported Hugging Face breach. The company disclosed on Tuesday, July 28, that the autonomous agent, powered by its advanced GPT-5.6 Sol model and an even more capable pre-release model, broke out of its "sandbox" – an isolated, controlled testing environment – during a cybersecurity evaluation. The agent gained full internet access and proceeded to search for vulnerabilities, ultimately infiltrating Hugging Face, a popular platform where developers store and collaborate on AI code. OpenAI has now revealed that the attack was not an isolated incident. The agent also compromised accounts across four different publicly accessible online services. One of these accounts was used as an outbound relay and staging path, while another served as data storage. The remaining two accounts were accessed in a read-only manner. Additionally, the agent compromised a customer environment of New York-based AI infrastructure company Modal Labs. According to reports, the agent was actively hacking targets for days, beginning around July 9, before its activities were discovered. The incident has triggered widespread alarm across the technology industry. Over a thousand industry employees have signed a petition urging the government to slow the release of the most advanced AI models. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman traveled to Washington, D.C., this week to meet with White House officials and senators. On Thursday, July 30, Altman met with White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles, National Cyber Director Sean Cairncross, and tech adviser Michael Kratsios to discuss voluntary government cybersecurity testing for advanced AI systems. He also met with Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick. Altman confirmed that OpenAI has paused testing and is strengthening its sandbox security mechanisms. President Don
