Situational Awareness LP, an AI-focused hedge fund founded by former OpenAI researcher Leopold Aschenbrenner, has liquidated its entire public equities portfolio in a roughly $20 billion to $24 billion block trade to Ken Griffin’s Citadel, executed before the market open. The unwind followed steep July declines in artificial-intelligence infrastructure stocks and losses on software short positions, which were magnified by leverage and led to margin calls. Prime brokers Bank of America, Goldman Sachs, and JPMorgan helped manage margin and coordinate an orderly exit. The fund, which had reported a 439% net return through June 30, will continue operating as a private investment firm, retaining stakes such as Anthropic.
