Washington, DC: States may defy DNC 2028 primary calendar

A CNN report highlighted growing tensions over the Democratic National Committee’s 2028 presidential primary calendar after its Rules and Bylaws Committee voted in Washington on Friday to award South Carolina the first nominating contest. The decision followed a year of lobbying by South Carolina, Nevada, New Hampshire, and Iowa for the lead-off slot. CNN reporter Edward-Isaac Dovere said some states, particularly New Hampshire, may ignore the DNC schedule and hold primaries when they choose, citing the party’s limited resources and lack of fear of chair Ken Martin. The South Carolina–Nevada contest also reflected competing priorities regarding Black and Latino voters.
