SAN DIEGO — Marvel Studios used its Comic-Con International presentation in Hall H on Saturday to unveil major casting decisions for its 2028 slate, announcing that David Jonsson will take on the mantle of Black Panther as the on-screen son of Chadwick Boseman’s T’Challa. Jonsson, 32, best known for roles in “Industry,” “The Long Walk” and “Alien: Romulus,” will lead “Black Panther III,” scheduled for release on December 15, 2028. He appeared on stage with franchise director Ryan Coogler and returning cast members Letitia Wright and Winston Duke, holding his hand to his chest and thanking what he called the “family” he was joining, while saying he preferred to let the finished film speak for itself. SAN DIEGO — The announcement answers years of fan questions that followed the 2022 film “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” which revealed that T’Challa had a son after Boseman’s death in 2020. The original 2018 “Black Panther” became the first superhero movie to earn a best picture Oscar nomination and grossed more than $1.3 billion worldwide, while the sequel took in $850 million. Marvel also confirmed that Ryan Gosling will enter the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Ghost Rider in a separate film planned for 2028, re-teaming with director Shawn Levy, who previously directed him in “Star Wars: Starfighter.” Levy recalled his earlier Hall H appearance promoting “Deadpool & Wolverine,” and Gosling told Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige and the crowd that he had wanted to play Ghost Rider for a long time. The character last headlined films led by Nicolas Cage in 2007 and 2012, before the rights reverted to Marvel and the character remained absent from the MCU until now.
