United States box office crowns Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey’

LOS ANGELES — Christopher Nolan’s “The Odyssey” generated an estimated $87 million in its second weekend in North American theaters, according to studio figures released Sunday. The total represents only a 30% decline from its first weekend, an unusually modest drop for a blockbuster that opened above $100 million and the strongest second-week performance of Nolan’s career in nominal terms, surpassing the $75.2 million earned by “The Dark Knight” in its second weekend in 2008. Paul Dergarabedian, head of marketplace trends at Rentrak, said the second-weekend gross would qualify as an impressive opening for most films and credited strong audience enthusiasm for Nolan’s latest epic. LOS ANGELES — The film’s momentum extended overseas, where it collected an estimated $128.3 million from international theaters this weekend, lifting its global total to about $639.6 million. Premium large-format screenings remained a major driver of revenue, with IMAX screenings alone contributing $48 million worldwide over the weekend. The 41 coveted 70mm IMAX screens took in $5.2 million, with most shows reported sold out through September as theaters add additional showtimes to meet sustained demand. With little new competition in the marketplace, the film’s second-weekend performance is rare for a title that opened above $100 million and ranks second only to “Deadpool & Wolverine” among R-rated releases.
