Boston trades rookie pitcher Early to Washington

WASHINGTON — The Boston Red Sox and Washington Nationals have agreed in principle to a trade sending left-handed starter Connelly Early to the Nationals in exchange for infielder Curtis Mead, according to multiple reports on Saturday night. The move comes a little more than a week before the Aug. 3 Major League Baseball Trade Deadline, as both clubs position their rosters ahead of the final stretch of the season. The reported deal was first noted by MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand, who said sources confirmed the one-for-one swap between the American League and National League clubs. BOSTON — Early, who made his Major League debut last season but still holds rookie status, has posted a 3.44 ERA with 9.1 strikeouts per nine innings across 17 starts this year, giving Washington a young left-handed option for its rotation. Mead, an infielder, will head to Boston as the Red Sox seek to add depth and versatility to their infield mix.
