OREGON–IDAHO BORDER — A fast-moving wildfire known as the Big Grass Fire has burned about 280,000 acres of dry rangeland and scrubland along the Oregon–Idaho border as of Sunday, July 26, 2026, forcing officials to raise evacuation orders to their highest levels in several rural communities. The blaze ignited in Malheur County, Oregon, before rapidly crossing into Owyhee County, Idaho, as gusty winds, high daytime temperatures and critically low humidity pushed flames across the high-desert landscape. Emergency management officials, county commissioners and local sheriffs have coordinated the response, warning residents to leave threatened areas as the fire continues to advance with minimal containment. Authorities report the Big Grass Fire is only 5 percent contained, according to incident data from the National Interagency Fire Center, regional dispatch offices and local emergency agencies.
