A sewage transport barge exploded on the Hudson River in New York City on the morning of July 24, killing one municipal employee and injuring two others, according to fire officials. The barge, used to move untreated sewage to treatment facilities, was docked when a violent blast occurred inside its hold. New York City Fire Department Deputy Assistant Chief David Sims said firefighters arrived to find significant damage from the explosion. Mayor Eric Adams stated there is currently no indication of criminal involvement and confirmed the incident has not disrupted operations at the associated wastewater treatment plant. The cause remains under investigation.
