On July 23, 2026, International Business Machines Corporation (IBM) announced that it has signed a definitive agreement to acquire HRL Laboratories, LLC, a Malibu, California-based research and development institution jointly owned by Boeing and General Motors. After the transaction closes, Boeing and General Motors will continue operational partnerships with IBM focused on advanced technologies and quantum research. IBM plans to integrate HRL’s silicon-spin qubit engineering, quantum sensing capabilities, and expertise in cryogenics, control electronics, and quantum materials into its quantum computing roadmap. HRL also brings a portfolio in high-speed communications electronics, advanced manufacturing, and materials science, supporting IBM’s long-term goal of fault-tolerant quantum systems.
