Federal regulators say the action will focus heavily on the upper portion of this segment to remove toxic material before heavy seasonal currents can carry contamination farther downstream, increasing the risk of wider dispersion. Under the plan, the EPA would undertake large-scale mechanical dredging of creek sediments and conduct deep excavations in adjacent banks where mercury levels are elevated. After removing contaminated material, the agency intends to backfill the disturbed areas with clean substrate and carry out full ecological restoration along affected banks. Officials describe the effort as an accelerated interim action intended to reduce immediate exposure risks while broader, long-term investigations of the entire watershed continue. The proposal also includes post-remediation monitoring to confirm the effectiveness of the cleanup and to inform subsequent phases of work at the Superfund site.
