Hagen Wildfire Explodes to 5,685 Acres in Oregon, Triggering Emergency Conflagration Act and Evacuations

OREGON – Authorities have escalated their response to the rapidly growing Hagen Fire in Umatilla County, which had burned an estimated 5,685 acres by July 21, 2026. The wildfire is burning about nine miles southwest of Tollgate in the Umatilla National Forest and has exhibited extreme behavior overnight, including numerous spot fires that complicated containment efforts. Governor Tina Kotek invoked Oregon’s Emergency Conflagration Act, the sixth such activation of the 2026 wildfire season, allowing the state to mobilize an incident management team and two structural task forces. These state resources are operating in unified command with federal and local crews to protect homes and other structures threatened by the fire. The Oregon State Fire Marshal said steep, inaccessible terrain and extreme weather are severely challenging the firefighting operation. Temperatures in the area are forecast to rise above 100 degrees Fahrenheit this week, further drying vegetation already stressed by a record-low winter snowpack and a prolonged period of hot, dry conditions. Officials reported that the Hagen Fire’s rapid growth forced crews to pull back from containment work on the nearby Ninemile Fire so they could shift personnel and equipment to higher-priority protection efforts. State Fire Marshal Mariana Ruiz-Temple highlighted that Oregon is contending with severe local fire conditions amid a nationwide shortage of available wildfire resources.
