The University of Michigan in Ann Arbor announced on Monday, July 20, 2026, that athletic director Warde Manuel will step down at the end of the 2026 calendar year, following an independent culture review of the athletic department. Manuel, who has served in the role since 2016, agreed to a mutual buyout of the remaining three years on his contract, previously extended through 2030. The $12 million review identified deficiencies in leadership accountability, organizational structure, and reporting culture, citing failures of oversight at senior levels. Manuel will assist with the transition and then serve temporarily as special advisor to President Domenico Grasso to help implement reforms.
