The United States has announced additional 50% tariffs on a broad range of Canadian imports, citing discriminatory treatment of U.S. products. President Donald J. Trump signed three presidential proclamations on July 21, 2026, invoking Section 338 of the Tariff Act of 1930 to authorize retaliatory duties. The measures target motor vehicles, dairy products, and alcoholic beverages, but also extend to a variety of goods such as wine, spirits, cement, and hockey sticks. According to U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer, the tariffs will cover about $20 billion in annual imports and will take effect on August 19, 2026, thirty days after signing.
