New York City and much of the Tri-State area were under a Tornado Watch until 9 p.m. Tuesday as severe thunderstorms swept through the region, prompting multiple Flash Flood Warnings. Warnings covered several New York City boroughs and nearby New Jersey and Connecticut counties, with forecasters predicting two distinct waves of storms. The afternoon and evening round was expected to be stronger, bringing damaging winds up to 60 mph, hail up to one inch, heavy downpours and a risk of isolated tornadoes. The weather disrupted transportation, stranding a motorist in New Jersey and causing thousands of power outages and hundreds of flight cancellations.
