Alexandria, Virginia authorities partially closed a key section of Duke Street on Monday, July 20, 2026, after an unknown caustic white powder spilled from a moving truck in the city’s West End, triggering a multi-hour hazardous materials response. Police and fire units responded at about 8:07 a.m. to the 5300 block of Duke Street following reports that a container had fallen from a vehicle and dispersed a white, powder-like substance across the roadway. Upon arrival, hazardous-materials technicians tested the material and determined it to be highly caustic, meaning it was capable of burning or corroding living tissue on contact. At about 8:49 a.m., the fire department’s hazmat team requested assistance from the city’s Department of Transportation and Environmental Services to help manage traffic and coordinate the response. A specialized cleanup contractor arrived at approximately 2:00 p.m. to begin safely removing the caustic substance under the oversight of emergency and environmental officials.
