Hazmat Incident Involving Unknown Caustic White Powder Closes Major Alexandria Road

Alexandria, Virginia authorities partially closed a key section of Duke Street on Monday, July 20, 2026, after an unknown caustic white powder spilled from a moving truck in the city’s West End, triggering a multi-hour hazardous materials response. Police and fire units responded at about 8:07 a.m. to the 5300 block of Duke Street following reports that a container had fallen from a vehicle and dispersed a white, powder-like substance across the roadway. Upon arrival, hazardous-materials technicians tested the material and determined it to be highly caustic, meaning it was capable of burning or corroding living tissue on contact. Officials said the substance was confirmed as caustic but its exact product name and composition had not yet been identified, and the source of the spill remained under investigation. Because of the potential health risk posed by the corrosive powder, Alexandria Police immediately closed westbound Duke Street between South Pickett Street and North Paxton Street and warned motorists to avoid the area and expect significant delays. The closure affected one of the city’s major thoroughfares during the morning commute and remained in place for several hours while crews worked to secure the scene. At about 8:49 a.m., the fire department’s hazmat team requested assistance from the city’s Department of Transportation and Environmental Services to help manage traffic and coordinate the response. A specialized cleanup contractor arrived at approximately 2:00 p.m. to begin safely removing the caustic substance under the oversight of emergency and environmental officials.
