Florida beach blasted during low Blue Angel flyover

PENSACOLA BEACH, Florida — The U.S. Navy’s Blue Angels flight demonstration team is investigating a low-altitude pass over Pensacola Beach that sent sand and beach equipment flying along the shoreline. Video from the scene shows beachgoers watching the team’s jets performing over the Gulf of Mexico when one aircraft flew noticeably lower over the beach itself, creating a strong jet blast. The blast lifted sand into the air and knocked over umbrellas and other loose items positioned close to the waterline, briefly disrupting people on the crowded beach. The Blue Angels told CBS News that during an arrival maneuver, one jet flew lower than its standard flight profiles for that segment of the performance, resulting in what the team described as a disturbance. The unit said the flyover was lower than it should have been and confirmed it has opened a review into the incident and the procedures that led to the maneuver. Officials have not reported any injuries, and the team said it is assessing the event as part of its safety and operational oversight for future demonstrations.
