Houston. Harris County District Attorney Sean Teare said Tuesday his office is conducting an independent investigation and is "more than prepared" to prosecute federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents if evidence shows criminal wrongdoing in the July 7 fatal shooting of Mexican immigrant Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, in an interview in his Houston office.
Teare said investigators have issued dozens of subpoenas as part of the probe and that his office will file charges if the evidence warrants prosecution; he described the inquiry as independent and transparent. The Department of Homeland Security has asserted the ICE agent fired after the van was weaponized, and federal review could run alongside local proceedings this week.
