IRELAND – Irish police have launched a murder investigation after 43-year-old American citizen Jamey Carney was found dead on Tuesday at a residence in Killarney, County Kerry, a major tourist town in southwest Ireland. Carney, originally from Westchester County, New York, moved to Ireland in 2021 with her young daughter and worked for a healthcare outsourcing company after a career in insurance and real estate in the New York metropolitan area. An Garda Síochána said a person of interest left the jurisdiction in the early hours of Tuesday, before Carney’s body was discovered, and officers are working with international law enforcement partners, including in the United Kingdom, to track his movements. The State Department confirmed an American had died in County Kerry on July 7 and said it is providing consular assistance to the family. IRELAND – Local media, including the Irish Mirror, reported that the person of interest is an asylum seeker who had been living in state-run accommodation in Killarney, allegedly fled to Turkey, and previously lived in France and the United Kingdom. RTÉ reported that investigators believe he first arrived in the U.K. before traveling to Ireland, and Irish police have contacted airline and transport officials as part of their efforts to establish his identity and route. Irish authorities have not released the man’s name, image or a physical description, citing legal reasons, and have not confirmed whether he is the man featured in social media posts with Carney. The killing has shocked the picturesque town, a gateway to Killarney National Park and the Ring of Kerry, where local councillor Martin Grady described Carney as a loving, caring mother who was always happy and smiling.
