Portland, Maine — This week Democratic U.S. Senate nominee Graham Platner has faced a publicly reported sexual assault allegation stemming from an incident the accuser says occurred in 2021, which Platner denies. On July 7, his campaign canceled fundraising events and paused some ads while he said he would consider the best path forward for his campaign. Augusta and state party officials this week said they are developing transparent procedures should Platner formally withdraw, as prominent Democrats including Sen. Bernie Sanders and others urged him to step aside. Potential replacements, including Nirav Shah and former Maine Senate President Troy Jackson, have emerged or filed exploratory paperwork while the Maine Democratic Party said it received repeated contact from Platner’s campaign about the replacement process.
