Washington Republicans leave capital as agenda stalls
Tap title to read story
Republican lawmakers left Washington, D.C., for the Fourth of July recess amid a significant legislative impasse that has frozen major elements of their policy agenda. Despite unified control of the presidency, House, and Senate, Republicans have been unable to agree on key national security, defense, and election-related legislation. In the House, a conservative rebellion halted floor activity and forced Speaker Mike Johnson to adjourn early without voting on the annual defense authorization bill, which usually passes with bipartisan backing. In the Senate, Republicans ended a tense closed-door meeting with President Donald Trump over his push for stricter voting rules ahead of the 2026 midterm elections.
