Saudi Arabia rejects US bases for Hormuz operation

Saudi Arabia’s refusal to provide access to its bases and airspace derailed a major U.S. military initiative in the Strait of Hormuz in May 2026, according to a June 30, 2026 Wall Street Journal report confirmed by regional intelligence officials. The mission, known as Operation Project Freedom, was launched by U.S. Central Command on May 3, 2026 to escort and extract more than 850 commercial cargo ships and oil tankers trapped in the Persian Gulf by Iranian naval blockades and mining. The Trump administration aborted the operation within 36 hours and threatened to suspend deliveries of key defensive weapons to Saudi Arabia, sharply straining bilateral ties.
