Denver democratic socialist defeats 15-term House incumbent

DENVER — Democratic socialist Melat Kiros, 29, has unseated 15-term U.S. Representative Diana DeGette in the Democratic primary for Colorado’s 1st Congressional District, delivering one of the most significant setbacks to the party establishment in recent years. The closely watched primary concluded on June 30, 2026, with the Associated Press projecting Kiros as the winner at 10:03 p.m. Mountain Time. With most ballots counted, Kiros held a lead of about six percentage points over DeGette, 68, while University of Colorado Regent Wanda James, 62, finished a distant third, drawing only a small share of the vote in the Denver-based district.
