London Anisimova advances as Wimbledon second round begins

LONDON — Amanda Anisimova led the American contingent into the Wimbledon second round on Tuesday, easing past Lina Gjorcheska of North Macedonia 6-3, 6-2 under overcast skies at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club. The sixth seed and last year’s women’s finalist advanced in straight sets to open her campaign on Day 2 of the Championships. Her victory came as play continued across the grounds, with a full slate of first-round matches scheduled on the grass courts at the London venue. LONDON — The day’s most anticipated match is set for the afternoon session, when 44-year-old Serena Williams returns to singles competition for the first time in nearly four years to face 20-year-old Australian Maya Joint. Williams last played a singles match at the 2022 US Open. Also on Tuesday’s schedule are women’s No. 3 seed Iga Swiatek, men’s No. 2 seed Alexander Zverev of Germany, and seeded Americans Taylor Fritz, the No. 6 seed, and Ben Shelton, the No. 4 seed. Television coverage begins at 6 a.m. ET on ESPN, with streaming available on ESPN+ and Fubo.
